VTA Bus 51

Description

Bus 51 enters Moffett Field through the main gate.  It takes Moffett Boulevard and Clark Road in, then follows a loop formed by South Akron Road, McCord Avenue, and North Akron Road before leaving again by Clark and Moffett.  It has four stops inside the gate, two on Clark near the entrances to Moffett Field and ARC, and one each on South and North Akron Roads.

Bus 51 runs only Monday through Friday, and only during the day, from about 6 AM to about 7 PM.  Check the VTA site for southbound (into Mountain View) and northbound (into Moffett Field) schedules, and for a current map.

At times in the past, the VTA has had a policy of allowing people going to or from Moffett Field on Bus 51 to ride free if they show the driver a NASA badge.  It is not known whether this policy is still in effect.  If not, the fare is $1.75 one-way (so $3.50 for a round trip).  You can also buy a day pass (good for all buses in the VTA network) for $5. 

While the current schedule is useful for people living in the area who want to take the bus in to work at ARC/Moffett Field, it is not all that useful for interns and other people living here who want to take the bus into Mountain View.  If you feel like suggesting expanded bus service - say, longer hours or weekend service during the summer - the suggestion site for VTA can be found here.  It's not anonymous; you'll have to give a name, an email address, and so forth, so if you're a rude twit, they might track you down and smack you upside the head with a dead herring or something, but if they get some polite suggestions they might expand the route.
