Top Things to Know When You Start at NASA Ames
#1 Thing to know:
- x.500 online
http://www.nasa.gov/centers/glenn/about/GRCfind.html
This is an online directory of everyone who works at NASA. When you first start, or if you're a very short term intern, you may not be in it quite yet.
(If I'm away from my links, I just do a google search for: NASA x.500 ... it's the first result.)
- Happy Hour / NASA Ames Exchange
The NASA Exchange is a special organization in charge of employee morale. They run things like the ARC NASA Exchange Lodge, the cafeteria, the gift shops, and the golf course.
This allows them to sell cheap tickets, NASA-themed goodies, etc.
Every Thursday at 5:30 pm, there's a Happy Hour that's well attended at the golf course club house (Tee Minus One Bar & Grill).
- Phone Numbers
Phone numbers at NASA Ames are often written or spoken as "4-XXXX". That's great if you're using a NASA hard line, but if you're on a cell phone or a non-NASA line, you need to know the full number.
Which is: 650-604-XXXX.
From a NASA phone number, to get a "line out" to a non-NASA number, dial 7+1+xxx-xxx-xxxx

This map is a little fuzzy, but it includes the NASA Exchange Lodge.
This map shows just the area inside the inner ARC fence.
This map shows Moffett Field, but not much of ARC.
