Style Tips
In order to maintain some degree of visual uniformity in this wiki, please lay things out as follows. When in doubt, follow the format of an existing entry.
General Guidelines
- It should be obvious, but: no foul language, insults, slurs, etc. Be nice.
- Wherever possible, paste text or tables instead of attaching files. Remember, the point of a wiki is that it can be edited within the wiki. If you have to open external programs to see and edit file attachments, the wiki is less convenient to use and edit. Also, attached files eat up more storage space than text.
- Photos are good.
- Great big honking large photographs are bad. Unless there's a good reason to go bigger, stick with about 640x480 pixels as a maximum. Use jpgs or another compressed format whenever possible.
- Set your fonts (see below). Font size defaults to xx-small, which is pretty teeny. Format and font occasionally default to some very weird settings, too, so set them for the whole page, after you're done adding text.
- The text editor also often adds extra blank lines when you save, so look for them. Likewise, it sometims messes up bulleted lists. (Yeah, it's a bit buggy, but pbwiki is also free.) If your bulleted list looks weird, select the entire list, hit the bullet button on the taskbar until the bullets are all gone (this may take two or more hits), then hit it once more put the bullets back. That usually fixes the problem.
- After you're done editing it's a good idea to select all and set Format to "Normal" and Font to "Arial". Again, no idea why it does this, but the editor shifts format and font on its own at times.
Page Layout
Use the following section headers for most individual pages:
-
Description
-
Main Web Site
-
Location
-
Drive Time
-
Public Transit
-
Hours
-
Cost
Text Formatting
-
Everything should be in "Normal" format and "Arial" font.
-
The main header ("Style Tips" on this page) should be in large size, bold, and it should be centered.
-
Section headers ("General" for this section) should be in small, bold and underlined.
-
The body text (what you're reading now) should be in x-small.
-
Keep it simple. Don't use tons of font sizes, fonts, colors, etc. If you put in blink tags or marching ants, I will send the zombies after you.
