Moffett Field Museum

Description
Moffett Field was an active Naval Air Station from 1931 until 1994, and it has a rich history. The dirigible USS Macon, an early "flying aircraft carrier", was based at Moffett Field, and the field later served as a hub for anti-submarine warfare aircraft. The Moffett Field Museum was established in 1993, as Moffett Field was turned over to the control of the NASA Ames Research Center.
Most but not all of the hardware on display has something to do with aircraft, whether lighter-than-air craft or the better known heavier-than-air vehicles. However, there are a few oddities, like a big honking metal pipe assembly that may be a gunnery periscope from one of the turrets on a world war two era cruiser. Why it's there or even exactly what it is are open to discussion, but the docents like discussion, so feel free to ask.
Note: Some third-party pamphlets indicate it's free to visit the museum. It's not (with some exceptions; see Cost, below). But it's worth the five bucks.
